This background trimming, or oval, is worn by personnel in the Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. Ovals are worn beneath Parachutist and Air Assault Badges on the Army Service/Dress uniform and Maternity Tunic. For measurement and and placement purposes, the oval and badge are considered a single item when worn together.

3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division was established from the Division’s 3rd Brigade, which had been created in 1964 with the redesignation of 505th Infantry (previously the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment). The Brigade was made up of its HHC and three Battalions, two that were designated 505th Infantry Regiment Battalions (1st and 2nd) and one from the 508th Infantry (1st).
On 15 January 2006, the Brigade was redesignated as a Brigade Combat Team, retaining the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 505th Infantry Regiment but losing the 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment to inactivation. The units that were added to the Brigade—5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Battalion, 319th Field Artillery Regiment, and 82nd Brigade Support Battalion—all had their own background trimmings. Additionally, the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 505th Infantry Regiment have their own distinct background trimmings based on the design of the HHC oval but with notches indicating their numerical battalion designations.
