U.S. ARMY 641ST SUPPORT GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia worn today by personnel in the 641st Regional Support Group was approved on 23 November 1999 for the 641st Support Group. Its scarlet and buff (gold) colors are traditionally used by Support units and denote the organization’s Support mission.

A sword, oriented with the point up, is a sign of both military preparedness and support for combat troops. A blue disc is used for the shield portion of the insignia (as opposed to the scroll section), and the demi-sun and its rays at the bottom of the disc suggest a sunrise that is symbolic of coming challenges which the unit is eager to tackle because of its thorough readiness, expressed in the unit motto of "Prepared For The Challenge."

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Headquartered in St. Petersburg, the 641st Regional Support Group is a subordinate unit of the 143rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, 377th Theater Sustainment Command. In August 2008, the Group’s outstanding service between 10 September 2004 to 30 April 2005 was honored with an Army Superior Unit Award. During that roughly seven-month period, the Group was responsible for the mobilization and demobilization of more than 5200 personnel that included both Soldiers (Army Reserve and Army National Guard) and Airmen (USAF Red Horse Airmen). More recently, the Group was deployed to Iraq from March to November 2019 in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. One of its most important tasks during that deployment was to provide Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) training to the Zeravani, a specialized branch of Peshmerga forces operated by the Kurdistan Regional Government, with the goal of turning the Zeravani students into C-IED instructors.
