The 58th Aviation Regiment, 1st Battalion flash and oval were approved on 17 November 2003 while the unit was still stationed at Fort Bragg (renamed Fort Liberty) in North Carolina. Although it relocated to Fort Rucker (renamed Fort Novosel) in Alabama in 2007, the Battalion’s mission remains unchanged: provide air-traffic services and airfield management in support of unified land operations.
Constituted on 22 January as the HQ Company, 58th Aviation Battalion on 22 January 1968, the Battalion was activated the following March in Vietnam and served there until its inactivation in February 1969, taking part in four campaigns and earning a Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Award for service in 1968.
The unit was redesignated as HQ and Service Company, 58th Aviation Battalion on 1 September 1986. It was designated as the 1st Battalion of the newly created 58th Aviation on 16 July 1987 and simultaneously activated at Fort Bragg, with its requisite organic elements constituted and activated at the same time. With the redesignation of Regimental titles in October 2005, the unit was given its full current designation of 1st Battalion, 58th Aviation Regiment.
In 2004, the Battalion deployed as part of the 18th Aviation Brigade for that unit’s final tour before inactivation, resulting in Meritorious Unit Commendations for both the Brigade and three Companies (A, D, F) of the Battalion. The Battalion as a whole has been tapped for two more MUCs, one for service in 2005-2006 and another for a 2008-2009 deployment to Central and Southwest Asia.
As of Summer 2023, the 1st Battalion, 58th Aviation Regiment is assigned to the 164th Theater Airfield Operations Group and is still stationed at Fort Novosel.
