U.S. ARMY 502ND TRANSPORTATION CENTER UNIT CREST (DUI)

The brick-red wheel with golden-yellow spokes of the 502nd Transportation Center Distinctive Unit Insignia incorporate the official branch colors of the Transportation Corps as specified with the establishment of the Corps in 1942. A wheel is a symbol of speed and mobility in military heraldry and alludes to the unit motto “Carry To Victory,” while the yellow fleur-de-lis on the wheel hub commemorate the unit’s baptism by fire in France and World War II service; the four spokes are for the four campaigns in which the unit took part.

A brilliant sunburst emanating from the hub signifies excellence and is another reference to France, where this image was used as a military symbol during the Medieval period. The wreath of combined laurel and oak that forms the base of the insignia symbolizes honor and strength, respectively.

Also known as a unit crest or by the initialism DUI, the 502nd Transportation Center Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 17 November 1994. The unit has since been inactivated.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
