U.S. ARMY 414TH CIVIL AFFAIRS BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

More commonly referred to as a unit crest or DUI, the 414th Civil Affairs Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 30 January 1995. Purple and white, official colors for Civil Affairs units, are counterchanged in the shield portion of the insignia to divide both the shield and the gridline globe into halves. Gold, traditional color for excellence in heraldry, is also used prominently in the gridlines of the globe and the upright sword placed over it, the insignia border, and for the text of the unit motto “Liaisons To The World.” The image of the sword and globe are adapted from the insignia of branch of Civil Affairs, while the globe recalls the worldwide capabilities of the unit.
Black is the color of strength and solidness.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
