The 411th Base Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, more commonly referred to as a unit crest or DUI, features the unit motto of “Service To All,” a reference to the fact that as an Army combat service support organization, it provided myriad services not only for American military personnel, but also for their dependents, civilian employees, and NATO forces. The Battalion was headquartered in Heidelberg, Germany, one of Germany’s most beautiful cities and home to the famous ruins of Heidelberg Castle (a stylized representation appears on this insignia).
Originally designated as U.S. Military Community Activity (USMCA) Heidelberg, the 411th Base Support Battalion was formed through the redesignation of the 94th Base Support Battalion, which itself had been created out of USMCA Heidelberg in October 1991 and was assigned to the 26th Area Support Group.
In 2005, the Army revamped its organization of Area Support Groups and Base Support Battalions to bring them in line with the U.S. Army Installation Management system employed across the globe. As a result, the 411th Base Support Battalion was inactivated and then consolidated with the 26th Area Support Group, which subsequently was reflagged as U.S. Army Garrison Heidelberg. The Garrison was handed over to the German government for conversion into civilian infrastructure in 2012.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e),
"Beret" and
"Garrison Cap," respectively.
