Like the 1st and 3rd Squadrons, the 2nd Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment was assigned to a Battlefield Surveillance Brigade (BSB), in its case the 504th based at Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos), Texas. It was activated in this role on 24 June 2010 and the following year was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Task Force Viper (i.e., the 504th BSB) with the 2nd Squadron, 38th Cavalry dubbed Task Force Gryphon.
Stationed at Forward Operating Base Boldak near the Pakistani Border, the Squadron was tapped for a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its counterinsurgency operations it carried out in conjunction with Aghan Border Police, Afghan Uniformed Police, Afghan National Police and Afghan Customs Police.
Both the organizational flash and oval, technically called Airborne background trimming, were approved on 14 February 2011.

Chapter 21-32, subsections (a) and (b) of the January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1. Instructions on the placement of the oval, which is worn in tandem with either the Parachutist or Air Assault badges, is explained in detail in
