U.S. ARMY 280TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Worn by personnel in the 280th Base Support Battalion, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (AKA unit crest or DUI) of the 280th Support Battalion features the Battalion motto SUPERBUS SERVIRE, Latin for “Proud To Serve,” and an upright sword to symbolize the organization’s dedication to providing the myriad services necessary for an Army installation in a foreign country to operate efficiently.

Based in Schweinfurt, Germany, the 280th Support Battalion was tasked with the support of several Army units stationed there and in nearby communities, primarily the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division (consisting of Infantry, Armor, Field Artillery, Engineer, and Logistic Battalions) and the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment. These units were stationed at two kasernes (barracks) within Schweinfurt city limits, and the Battalion’s support organizations included Finance, Medical, Personnel, Dental, AASFES, Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) and Depart of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS). In all, the Battalion supported more than 12,000 Soldiers, civilian employees of the Army, and their family members.

The 280th Support Battalion was under the command of the 6th Area Support Group when it was inactivated in 2005 and consolidated with that organization, which in turn was reflagged as U.S. Army Garrison Schweinfurt. The Garrison was closed in September 2014.

The 280th was one of only a few Base Support Battalions that had its own standalone Web page. It is no longer available on the Web, but a record of it can be found at the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine.
