Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The 27th Financial Management Support Unit was originally formed in 1988 as the 42nd Finance Company and assigned to the 42nd Infantry division. In September 1993 it was redesignated as Headquarters, 27th Finance Battalion and relocated from Troy to Albany. A decade elapsed before the unit underwent another redesignation as its HQ expanded to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment in 2003, with the number of detachments assigned to it doubling from two to four. It later went on to be redesignated as the 27th Financial Management Support Unit.
A unit in the New York Army National Guard, the 27th Financial Management Support Unit (FMSU) has been deployed abroad on several occasions since the launch of the War on Terrorism. In 2008 its destination was Kuwait, where it was able to provide finance support to both ground forces and strategic elements serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. It returned to the region again in 2013 when it was deployed to Kuwait, this time to provide its financial expertise to personnel fighting and support Operation Enduring Freedom. Most recently, the Unit sent twenty-five Soldiers to Afghanistan in June 2019 for a nine-month deployment. Whether stateside or abroad, however, the 27th FMSU is constantly working to "Finance The Fight."
