U.S. ARMY 206TH CHEMICAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 206th Chemical Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), better known as a “unit crest,” was approved on 28 September 2004. Rendered almost exclusively in cobalt blue and golden yellow, the branch colors of the Chemical Corps, the insignia’s eye-catching design features a key, a pickaxe, a horsehead, and a fire-breathing dragon. The dragon, technically referred to as a wyvern, is superimposed on a gold pile (downward-pointing triangle) that symbolizes the dramatic way chemical warfare affects military options.

A mystical creature embodying strength and power, the wyvern is colored red to reflect the Battalion’s ties to the Engineer Corps (the 206th Engineer Battalion became the 301st Chemical Company under the command of the 206th Chemical Battalion). Fire and smoke from the wyvern represent the destructive power of chemical weaponry and are also a reference to the unit motto FLAMMA FUMO EST PROXIMA, Latin for “Fire Follows Smoke.” Below the pile, a horsehead is an allusion to the unit’s home state of Kentucky, renowned for thoroughbred horses; it is facing the pick to again recall the organization’s Engineer lineage. A key is a reference to unit lineage linking it the 38th Military Police Company in World War II.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally organized and Federally recognized on 1 October 2002 in the Kentucky Army National Guard as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 206th Chemical Battalion, the unit was ordered into active Federal service at Richmond, Kentucky on 1 June 2005, and was released form service on 28 November 2006; the Battalion earned credit for participation in the Global War on Terrorism campaign in the War On Terrorism during this period.

The following year, the extremely short service life of the 206th Chemical Battalion drew to a close with its reorganization and redesignation as HQ and HQ Detachment, 103rd Chemical Battalion on 1 September 2007.
