U.S. ARMY 193RD AVIATION REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 193rd Aviation Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved with an effective date of 2 October 1986. It features an ultramarine blue shield and a golden orange Hawaiian spear, the two colors of Army Aviation, and the unit motto of KU WELA KA HAO (Strike While The Iron Is Hot”) on a red scroll (red is the color for valor and courage in heraldry) enveloping the bottom half of the shield. The spear is an allusion to the unit’s location in Hawaii, while the white (silver) wings denotes its Aviation mission. Blue, red, and white are the National colors.

Readily accessible documentation regarding the 193rd Aviation Regiment’s lineage and history is extremely limited. It can be assumed the Regiment was organized and activated some time around 1986 when approval for its unit crest was given. The Regiment is mentioned in descriptions of Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield, and two of its components—B and C Companies—were awarded Meritorious Unit Commendations for service against the Taliban in 2004-2005 and in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004-2005, respectively.

According to the State of Hawaii Department of Defense’ Annual Report, Company B, 193rd Aviation Regiment was redesignated as Company B, 1st Battalion, 777th Aviation Support Battalion in Fiscal Year 2007, while Company C was redesignated as Company C, 193rd Aviation Regiment at approximately the same time.
