The organizational flash and Airborne background trimming (oval) approved for the 151st Infantry Detachment was approved on 8 April 2004, nearly fifteen years after the unit was created through reorganization and redesignation of the Long Range Surveillance Detachment, 1st Squadron, 238th Cavalry 1 October 1989. In September 2008, the 151st Infantry Detachment was reorganized and redesignated as Troop C, 2nd Squadron, 152nd Cavalry.
The Flash is worn on the maroon beret denoting the Airborne-designation of the organization, which was derived from the Indiana Army National Guard’s 38th Infantry Division’s Airborne Infantry Battalion due to restructuring of National Guard and Reserve units during the Vietnam conflict. Airborne-qualified personnel from that Battalion were used to create two Long Range Patrol Companies, D and E, 151st Infantry (Airborne), which were later combined to create a single Company D in the lineage of the 151st Infantry Detachment.
Officers wear their nonsubdued, metal insignia of rank on the flash, is centered on the stiffener of the maroon beret, while Enlisted personnel wear the 151st Infantry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia in the same style. Airborne background trimming, or oval, is worn by those personnel who have earned Parachutist or Air Assault badges; the oval is worn beneath the badge and placed on Service Uniform coats (AGSU and ASU), Class B AGSU shirts, and the Army Maternity Tunic (female Soldiers only).
During its relatively brief period of service in Vietnam, Company D, 151st Infantry compiled an astonishing number of individual and unit decorations. Among the individual awards were nineteen Silver Stars, 123 Bronze Stars (nearly 90 with “V” devices for valor), 111 Air Medals, 101 Purple Hearts, and 183 Army Commendation Medals (twenty-nine with the “V” device). Additionally, the unit earned battle honors for four campaigns in the course of a single year: Counteroffensive Phase VI, Tet 69/Counteroffensive, Summer-Fall 1969, and Winter-Spring 1970.
