The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the South Carolina Army National Guard's 151st Aviation Regiment was originally approved on 27 February 1989. It incorporates the Aviation branch colors of ultramarine blue and golden orange in the shield background and a fox’s mask, respectively. That mask is an allusion to Francis Marion, the famous Revolutionary War militia leader nicknamed the “Swamp Fox” because of the speed and cunning his forces used to strike quickly and then melt back into the miasma of the swampy low country of the Carolinas.
Wings on the mask symbolize the flight capabilities of the organization, while the increscent (points facing left) moon is taken from the South Carolina state flag and also recalls the Revolutionary War. “Ready To Strike” encapsulates the speed at which the Regiment can mobilize and attack, and the white inscription on a black banner suggests the day-and-night readiness and capabilities of the Regiment.
Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
