Officially known as Airborne background trimming, this embroidered oval was approved for wear by personnel in the Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division on 2 April 2014, slightly over four years before the Battalion was inactivated on 15 April 2014. It is authorized for wear by Battalion personnel who had earned a Parachutist or Air Assault badge; the badge is centered on top of the oval which was then attached to the Service
At the time the Battalion was inactivated, the oval-badge combination was worn on the green and blue service coats and the service uniform’s shirt; today’s regulations are similar, with its wear authorized on the Service Uniform coat of the ASGU and ASU, the Class B ASU shirt, and Army Maternity Tunics (female Soldiers only).
