Activated as the 518th Replacement Company on 20 June 1944, the 1st Personnel Services Battalion did not receive the numerical designation that was eventually incorporated into its unit motto (“First In Soldier Support”) until it became the 1st Personnel Services Company in 1985. Between then, the unit was active during World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam with processing new troops.
It was redesignated as a battalion in 1995 and garrisoned at Fort Riley, Kansas. Though technically it fell under the organizational structure of the 3rd Personnel Group, III Corps out of Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos), in reality it was under control of 937th Engineer Group, also based at Fort Riley. The 1st Personnel Services Battalion was inactivated in September 2002.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
