U.S. ARMY SECURITY ASSISTANCE COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

The United States Army Security Assistance Command Distinctive Unit Insignia, often referred to as a unit crest or as a DUI for short, was originally approved for the U.S. Army Security Affairs Command on 15 December 1986. It was subsequently given its current designation, along with a revised description, on 1 April 1990.

A gridlined globe denotes the Command’s scope in encouraging cooperation with friendly nations seeking aid in ensuring their national security. A flaming torch rests atop the globe, an emblem of enlightenment provided by the education and training the Command offers that reinforces the organization’s dedication to assisting other countries in the provision of their security.

Two stars bookend the torch to signify the international partnership promoted by the Command, also suggesting the Command’s excellence in liaising with other countries in training and in orchestrating the sale and delivery of U.S. Army materials. “Strength In Cooperation,” the Command motto, embodies the ultimate goal of its various missions.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

The United States Army Security Assistance Command (USASAC) was formed in 1977 from the U.S. Army Internal Logistics Command and given the mission of acting as the Department of the Army’s executive agency for handling security assistance matters. In 1986, it was reorganized as the United States Army Security Affairs Command and was subsequently given its current title of Security Assistance Command in 1990.

Headquartered at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, the USASAC is a major subordinate command of U.S. Army Materiel Command. While security assistance is administered by the State Department, it is the Department of Defense—working in tandem with the Executive branch, Congress and the Treasury Department—that executes the policies. The goals of security assistance programs include but are not limited to deterrence of aggression, promotion of regional stability, and the maintenance of strategic alliances.
