U.S. ARMY 844TH ENGINEER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Approved on 20 April 1961, the 844th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia employs scarlet and white colors denote the organization’s status as part of the Army Corps of Engineers. On the shield portion of the insignia is a brick wall and two piles, or downward-pointing triangles, both of which are images associated with the construction function of Engineer units. In the center, an airplane propeller recalls the units fifteen years of service as an Engineer Aviation Battalion, while the ermines sprinkled liberally over the white chevron and background are a reference to service in Europe.

TERRA AD CAELUM, the unit motto, is a Latin phrase that translates in English as “Through Earth To Sky,” presumably a reference to the scope of the Battalion’s mission while designated as an Engineer Aviation Battalion.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

The 844th Engineer Battalion was originally constituted under that designation on 15 July 1942 in the Army of the United States and activated on 1 October 1942 as the 844th Engineer Aviation Battalion. It earned an uninscribed European-African-Middle Eastern Theater streamer, the lack of a specific battle or campaign being written on it because the unit did not serve together in sufficient numbers at a specific battle or in a campaign.

Allotted to the Organized Reserve Corps in September 1948, the Battalion has remained a Reserve organization since that time, but it has been called to active military service on numerous occasions over the decades. It was given its current designation of 844th Engineer Battalion on 21 January 1957, and in October 1961 it was ordered into active service for the first time since being allotted to the Reserve. In January 1968, its headquarters were moved to their current location of Knoxville, Tennessee.

During the First Gulf War in 1990 – 1991, the Battalion deployed to Southwest Asia and took part in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and earned battle honors for the Liberation and Defense of Kuwait and the Cease-Fire that followed. It has also been called to active service for at least two deployments to the Middle East since the launch of the War on Terrorism, where its outstanding service in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2009 – 2010 was subsequently honored with a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

As of Winter 2024, the
844th Engineer Battalion remains allotted to the U.S. Army Reserve and is assigned to the 926th Engineer Brigade, 412th Theater Engineer Command.

When not in active service, the 844th Engineer Battalion is assigned to the 926th Engineer Brigade, 412th Theater Engineer Command, U.S Army Reserve.
