U.S. ARMY 77TH COMBAT SUSTAINMENT SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 77th  Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB) is a United States Army Reserve unit headquartered in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Assigned to the 210th  Regional Support Group, 1st Mission Support Command, the Battalion’s roots go back to World War I (symbolized on the unit crest). In recent years, it was called into active Federal service to relieve the 157th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion in Afghanistan (2013), and in August 2018, the Army announced that it would be conducting a pilot program in the implementation process of the newly crafted Army Physical Fitness Test.

The 77th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion Unit Crest Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, has been designated for a wide variety of units over the years, reflecting the Battalion’s constantly changing role in the Army Reserve. It was first approved for the 77th Division Train, Quartermaster Corps, Organized Reserve on 28 October 1925. Since then, it has been redesignated for the 402nd Quartermaster Regiment (December 1937), 402nd Quartermaster Battalion (March 1942), 77th Supply and Transportation Battalion (March 1964), 77th Support Battalion (September 2009), and most recently for its current designation as 77th CSSB.

“Always Prepared,” the Battalion’s unit motto, embodies the commitment of the Battalion personnel to be consistently ready to support operations and personnel with support services and materiel. A buff shield reflects the Battalions’ origins in the Quartermaser Corps, while a blue, wavy pale (vertically oriented wavy line) symbolizes the Vesle river in France, where the unit first saw combat. On the left of the pale is a cross that represents combat service in Lorraine; on the right, an oak tree that is an emblem recalling the Argonne.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
