761ST MILITARY POLICE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 761st Military Police Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 5 April 2012. Green and gold, the insignia’s dominant colors, are the Military Police Corps’ branch colors.

Based in Alaska for its entire military history, the 761st MP Battalion has a DUI pays homage to its home area with two images of sights commonly associated with the state: a polar bear set against the backdrop of a mountain range (recalled here by a dancetté). The polar bear is also an emblem of the constant vigilance of the Military Police as they defend the Great Land.

The green used for the dancetté is a reference to the earth that makes up that land and is a reference to the unit motto, VALLO VALDE TERRA—Latin for “The Land Is Very Rampant.”

The 761st Military Police Battalion is the descendant of the Alaska Territorial Guard, a U.S. Army reserve force organized in 1942 that became a constabulary unit stationed at Fort Richardson in the Alaskan Territory toward the end of World War II. It eventually was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, 297th Infantry Regiment, which became the 761st Military Police Battalion in September 2010.

On 22 January 2017, the history and achievements of the 761st Military Police Battalion and its predecessor organizations were celebrated and its colors cased for a final time during an inactivation ceremony held at Alaska National Guard Armory at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
