Commonly called a unit crest, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the Support Battalion, 5th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division was approved on 27 May 2008. It consists of a shield with a Soldier-Red background and an attached black scroll with the unit motto, “Support In Strength,” inscribed in silver.
The horizontal bar (fess) alludes to a highway to symbolize the Battalion’s Transportation function and extensive travel over great distances to deliver logistical support. Six star denote the component that made up the 5th Brigade Combat Team, not counting the HQ and HQ Company: two Combined Arms Battalions, a Fires Battalion, a Special Troops Battalion, Future Force Integration Directorate, and the Support Battalion.
A crossed key and hammer signify the Battalion’s mission of securing military supplies for distribution to authorized organizations (key) and the maintenance of the Brigade’s vehicles. The jagged line at the top of the shield, called a dancette, simulates the mountainous area outside Fort Bliss where the 5th Brigade Support Battalion was organized. A single silver star is an emblem of Command and Control for the original support branches in the Battalion: Transportation, Quartermaster, and Ordnance.
Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
Also known as the Army Evaluation Task Force, the 5th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division was created to test various types of weapons and materiel that were being considered for distribution throughout the Army as part of the Future Combat System. The Brigade and all its subordinate units, including the Support Battalion, were inactivated in late 2009 or early 2010.
