U.S. ARMY 489TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Frequently called a unit crest, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) that was worn by the 489th Brigade Support Battalion up until its inactivation in September 2020 was originally approved on 30 November 2010 for the 489th Support Battalion.

Buff and scarlet, colors associated with Support units, are used for the shield portion of the insignia. In the center of the shield is an upright sword resting upon a ship’s wheel surmounting a crossed key and cannon. The trio of objects—key, cannon, and wheel—are all images associated with the Logistics Corps. In the chief (uppermost portion) of the insignia is a covered wagon with the rising sun behind it, invoking the wagon-master heritage and traditions of the Quartermaster Corps and their provision of sustained delivery to the war fighter. SUSCIPIO VICTORIA is the Battalion motto. It is a Latin phrase that translates to English as “Supporting Victory.”

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

The 489th Brigade Support Battalion was activated into the Utah Army National Guard in 2008. Its primary mission was to provide logistics support to its parent unit, the 204th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.

Headquartered in Springville, the Battalion consisted of its HQ and HQ Company, the 118th Transportation Company (Spanish Fork, Utah), and a Field Maintenance Company based in Louisiana.

The battalion was composed of three companies: Headquarters and Headquarters Company in Springville; the 118th Transportation Company in Spanish Fork, Utah; and a field maintenance company in Louisiana, which will also be deactivated.

The 489th Brigade Support Battalion was inactivated in 2020, with the Battalion casing its colors during a ceremony held at the Springville Readiness Center. Personnel serving at the time the Battalion was inactivated were transferred to the 625th Military Police Battalion that was activated concurrently.
