U.S. ARMY 458TH ENGINEER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Commonly referred to as a “unit crest,” the 458th Engineer Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) was approved on 16 September 1954. Its red and white shield points to the Battalion’s status as an Engineer organization, as those are the official branch colors of the Army Corps of Engineers. A lion rampant that dominates the shield is taken from the coat of arms of St. Vith in Belgium, the area where the German-Ardennes offensive—codenamed “Watch On The Rhine” by the Germans and dubbed the “Battle of the Bulge” by American war reporters—was ultimately halted by the incredibly tenacious defense put up by outnumbered and outgunned American troops.

The red, curved horizontal band, called a “fess archy” in heraldry, simulate the Ludendorff Bridge that spans the Rhine at Remagen, successfully taken undamaged by American troops to open the way into the heart of Germany in early 1945. The battle-axe below the lion was a favorite Teutonic weapon and used in heraldry throughout the Medieval period; here it represents the unit’s Central Europe campaign participation. “Never So Much By So Few” is the Battalion motto recalling the incredible importance of the seizure of the bridge at Remagen.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
