U.S. ARMY 411TH CIVIL AFFAIRS BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Commonly called a unit crest, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the 411th Civil Affairs Battalion was approved on 15 March 1993. Purple and white, the branch colors of Civil Affairs, are used on the shield, with a purple pile (point-down triangle) against a white field. A torch in the pile symbolizes guidance and leadership, while the crossed swords commemorate the unit’s baptism by fire during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. “Assistance Victory Peace,” the unit motto, sums up the three major steps of a Civil Affairs operation during and after a military conflict.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
