Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."
The 39th Finance Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 26 April 1994. It consists of a scarlet shield with a black pale (vertical bar) containing three golden lozenges (diamonds) and a black scroll that almost completely encompasses the shield. Scarlet is the color of sacrifice and courage; black is for solidity, responsibility, and solvency; gold is for excellence and high achievement.
Gold and silver are the branch colors of the Finance Corps, and the diamond-shaped devices called lozenges serve as the Corps’ branch insignia. Three of them are used on the black pale to commemorate the three World War II campaigns in which the unit participated (although the U.S. Army Center of Military History attributes five campaigns to the unit while it is designated as the 39th Finance Disbursing Section from 1942 to 1946). Taken together, the insignia’s three colors—red, black, and yellow—recall the unit’s historic association with Germany, where it had served between December 1951 and the date of this insignia’s approval.
Besides 39th Finance Battalion and 39th Finance Disbursing Section, the unit was also known as Detachment 6055-S (its original designation when constituted on 26 June 1942), 39th Finance Section, 39th Finance Center, 39th Finance Support Unit, and 39th Financial Management Support Unit.
