Also called a unit crest, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) that has been worn by personnel of the 837th Engineer Battalion since 2018 was originally approved for the Special Troops Battalion, 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team on 1 November 2007 and pays homage to the unit’s home state of Ohio, where it serves in the Army National Guard.

A star upon an embattled wall is a reference to Shawnee Chief Tecumseh, leader of the Shawnee nation and a confederacy of Native American tribes who was born in Ohio and whose name means “Shooting Star.” Another reference to the great leader is the pipe tomahawk on the bend (diagonal bar), which symbolizes the Battalion’s warrior spirit. And the Battalion motto, “Bow To None,” is taken from a speech by Tecumseh.
Lightning flashes over the bend denote the Communications (Signal) and Electronic Warfare (Miliary Intelligence) capabilities of the Battalion and also highlight the unit’s speedy response to mission requirements. The black and white of the bend and pipe-tomahawk, as well as for the scroll and text, are for the ability to function night and day, and the embattled wall points to the Battalion’s Engineer functions, while its scarlet color is for courage and sacrifice. he scarlet roundel with white edging is taken from the flag of the State of Ohio and is also seen on the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the 37th "Buckeye" Division, immediate predecessor of the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
Special Troops Battalion, 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Teams was converted and redesignated on 1 September 2018 as the 837th Engineer Battalion, an element of the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. As of Winter 2024, the Battalion remains an active unit in the Ohio National Guard and is a subordinate unit of the 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
