More commonly called a unit crest, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the 348th Transportation Battalion was approved for wear on 11 September 1970. It consists of a gold chess rook, its shape somewhat obscured by a disc of red, white, and blue and containing within it a star set upon a gold disc within a black ring. Encircling the disc is a scroll of brick red inscribed with the unit motto, “Logistics Over The Shore.”
The rook is a symbol of the agility of the Battalion and its effectiveness in the performance of its mission. A single star on the gold disc stans for Houston, home of the Battalion’s HQ in the “Lone Star” state. Wavy bars of blue and white abutting the brick-red upper portion of the disc denote the unit’s capability to command and control water-terminal operations.
Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.

Allotted to the Army Reserve since 1947, the 348th Transportation Battalion was originally constituted on 23 November 1944 in the Army of the United States as HQ and HQ Detachment, 526th Port Battalion, Transportation Corps. Activated on 4 December 1944, the Battalion was deployed to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater where its service was recognized with a Theater Streamer (without inscription of a specific battle or campaign). It was inactivated while still on Okinawa on 29 May 1946.
Given the new designation of HQ and HQ Detachment, 348th Transportation Port Battalion at the same time it was allotted to the Organized Reserves in October 1947, the Battalion was soon redesignated again as the HQ and HQ Services Company, 348th Transportation Port Battalion in November 1950. On 8 April 1955, it was given the designation it has retained going on seven decades, the HQ and HQ Detachment, 348th Transportation Battalion.
According to the Web site of the 87th Training Division that was updated in January 2022, the 348th Transportation Battalion is assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 87th Training Division, 84th Training Command. But a news update on the Web page of the 4th Expeditionary Sustainment Command dated 7 March 2022 noted that the Soldiers from the 453rd Cargo Transfer Company, a subordinate unit of the Battalion, were preparing to mobilize in Houston for an overseas deployment in support of United States Central Command, and that the 348th Transportation Battalion fell under the command of the 90th Sustainment Brigade, 4th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, 377th Theater Sustainment Command, United States Army Reserve.
