U.S. ARMY 177TH FINANCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 177th Finance Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 22 March 1994, more than fifty years after the unit was originally constituted in the Army of the United States as the 177th Finance Disbursing Section. Activated on 1 November 1944 in New Guinea, the organization would earn an uninscribed (i.e., no reference to a specific battle or campaign) Asiatic-Pacific campaign streamer before its inactivation in Australia on 15 April 1946.

Twenty years would elapse before the unit was activated again at Fort Devens, Massachusetts on 26 July 1966; it would be inactivated almost two years to the day later on 25 July 1968. Another long period of inactivation (eighteen years) would pass before the unit was redesignated in October 1986 as the 177th Finance Support Unit and its activation in Korea, where it would be reorganized and redesignated as the 177th Finance Battalion on 16 November 1993.

In 2006, the Army’s restructuring of its Finance Battalions into Centers and Companies led to the inactivation of the 177th Finance Battalion, with some of its Soldiers able to continue serving in the Finance Branch by forming a new Detachment in Yongsan Garrison’s 176th Finance Battalion.
