U.S. ARMY 158TH QUARTERMASTER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

According to information posted at The Institute of Heraldry Web site, the motto displayed on the 158th Quartermaster Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, “Dziil Bee Anéíijah,” translates as “Supporting Strength,” but unfortunately the reader is not told from what original language the phrase is taken. The Battalion’s home state of Arizona is represented by the color blue and a single star, a reference to  the state flag, in the top portion of the shield. Three arrows, traditional weaponry used by Native Americans, symbolize readiness and also refer to the provision of materiel to Army personnel, with the three billets (black rectangles) standing for the Quartermaster mission elements of selection, evaluation, and distribution; black is used to denote strength and solidarity.

The middle portion of the shield (fess) shows four colors in the form of stylized mountain peaks, a reference to the four colors associated with four mountains held as sacred by the Navajo (could the motto be in the Navajo language?). The thin horizontal bar below them refers to the home state of Arizona (it is in the same color as the star), and gold is used throughout as an allusion both the Quartermaster’s responsibility of wise stewardship and to the achievement of excellence.

The 158th Quartermaster Battalion DUI was approved on 4 March 2005.

Extensive guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
