Now worn by the personnel of the 152nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, the 152nd Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 5 October 2011. Its shield is divided into three main areas: the chief (top third) and two areas below it divided diagonally by a wavy blue line, with imagery that pays tribute to its home state of South Dakota as well as Army standards and principles.
Above the wavy blue line, which symbolizes the Missouri River, the green area denotes the prairie of South Dakota and the Battalion’s six original locations (Pierre, Sioux Falls, Flandreau, Milbank, Aberdeen, and Mitchell). An American Indian tepee represents the earliest warriors of the plains and serves as a reminder to serve and protect all people in the state and nation and to appreciate and respect all peoples and all cultures. Below the “river” is a buff-colored area with an upright sword surrounded by seven stars that form the outline of an arrow or the vertical lines of a triangle. Buff is for the Badlands of South Dakota; the stars represent the Battalion’s pledge to support the Army’s core values (loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage). The upright sword symbolizes the “Warrior First” culture and a commitment to excellence in all endeavors.
The chief’s position denotes dominance. Its red background is an allusion to a red sky at sunset, signifying “mission accomplished” at the end of a campaign. Stylized mountains are rendered in black to recall the Black Hills, one of the most prominent geographical features of the state of South Dakota. PROELIUM SUSTINE is the unit motto and is Latin for the ultimate goal of any Support unit: “Sustain The Fight.”
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
