U.S. ARMY 145TH CAVALRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST INSIGNIA (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) of the 145th Cavalry Regiment was approved on 12 July 1996. In the yellow shield portion of the insignia is a Korean taeguk resting atop the blade of uplifted cavalry saber, with arrowheads or pheons emerging in the four main compass directions (N, E, S, W). The yellow shield denotes the unit’s status as a Cavalry organization, while the unsheathed saber reinforces the motto “Keen Saber” and is a symbol of military preparedness and combat readiness. Four arrowheads acting almost as compass roses are a symbol of the Regiment’s ability to deploy and operate anywhere in the world; they also memorialize participation in four assault landings during World War II. At the center, the taeguk is a sign of Korean service.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
