Headquartered at Harrodsburg, Kentucky and assigned to the 138th Field Artillery Brigade, the 103rd Brigade Support Battalion was constituted as the 103rd Support Battalion on 1 June 2008 in the Kentucky Army National Guard. Because it was organized from a mix of new and existing units, its history includes battle honors and military decorations from conflicts that occurred long before that date. Its HQ and HQ Company, for instance, is credited with a World War II Victory award and a Philippine Island campaign streamer, as well as a War on Terrorism award and a Meritorious Unit Commendation for the period July 2013 to April 2014. It is also credited with three Presidential Unit Citations from the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation streamer embroidered “7 December 1941 to 10 May 1942.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however. The 103rd Brigade Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, also referred to as a unit crest or just DUI, was originally approved for the 103rd Supply and Service Battalion on 12 October 1971; it was redesignated for the 103rd Support Battalion on 11 January 1982. It features two arms—one of a statesman, the other of a pioneering settler—holding up a triangle with a scarlet field and buff sea lion. The crossed arms are used to reflect the unit’s basic mission of support, while the sea lion and scarlet field are adapted from the seal of the President of the Philippines (alluding to the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation credited to the Battalion). The blue field below it is a reference to the Pacific area, where the organization served in World War II; three stars equal three campaigns (New Guinea, Leyte, and Luzon). The scarlet of the scroll containing the unit motto of “The Summit of Support” is for a Meritorious Unit Commendation a predecessor unit was awarded.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
