U.S. ARMY 100TH AREA SUPPORT GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The 100th Area Support Group Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 3 May 1994. Its buff (also rendered as gold) and scarlet colors have long been associated with Support units: Scarlet epitomizes courage and zeal, while gold represents excellence and high ideals. The laurel wreath encircling the triangle is an emblem of achievement and honor, and triangles signify support and solidity. Blue and white fusils and the boar’s head insides the triangle indicate the unit’s area of operations (Germany). The unit motto, “Always Quality Service,” embodied the organization’s zeal for meeting the needs of the Army units and installations it supported.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 100th Area Support Group (ASG) was established on 1 October 1991 with its headquarters based at Grafenwöhr; it was one of several Support Groups design to consolidate military communities into a support system in which each ASG was assigned several Base Support Battalions (BSBs) and Area Support Teams (ASTs). It originally comprised four BSBs: the 281st (headquartered at Vilseck), 282nd (Hohenfels), 283rd (Wildflecken), and 409th (Grafenwöhr); the 416th at Nuremberg was added when the 99th Area Support Group was inactivated in 1993.

In 2005, the Army’s system of Area Support Groups, Base Support Battalions, and Area Support Teams was replaced with twenty-one U.S. Army Garrisons, in keeping with the Army’s Standard Garrison Organization. Concurrent with its inactivation, the 100th Area Support Group was reflagged as U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwöhr.
