A spread eagle with a red “A” is referred as the Direc-tor (DIR) insignia, but it also serves as the insignia for three other Coast Guard Auxiliary offices that are filled by appointment: Deputy Assistant National Commodore (ANACO-d), National Commodore Administrative Assistant (N-A), and Senior Fellow. All Auxiliarists wearing this insignia report to National Staff superiors, including Directors, who are also referred to as Directorate Chiefs.
Auxiliarists in these offices wear the insignia as a pin-on metal collar device on the Winter Dress Blue, Undress Blue—Winter, and Undress short-sleeve shirts. It is oriented so that the eagle is facing forward with its leading wing tip an inch from the inner edge of the shirt collar. The device is centered between the top and bottom edges of the shirt collar.
The same insignia is worn on the collars of the Operational Duty Uniform and Jump Suit, but a sew-on version with the insignia embroidered on a fabric backing is used.
