U.S. ARMY 856TH QUARTERMASTER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 856th Quartermaster Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, better known as a unit crest or DUI, was approved for wear on 27 June 2005. Its buff (gold) and light blue color tones are the official branch colors of the Quartermaster Corps, and they are prominent displayed in combination in this insignia in the motto text/scroll background as well as with the blue stars/buff trim.

Gold is the heraldic color associated with excellence and high achievement, and here it is used for the eagle and the crossed sword and key to emphasize the day and night, 24/7 nature of the Quartermaster mission of Quartermaster Logistics Warriors. The crossed key and sword are taken from the Quartermaster Corps insignia of branch, while the eagle’s head is adapted from it (the branch insignia has a full, spread-winged eagle). “Service To Victory” highlights the essential role Quartermaster and other Support units play in mission achievement.

A sword emphasizes the organization’s military preparedness and its logistical support for combat units, while the key is an emblem for the storekeeping mission, including supply management. The aforementioned stars number thirteen to recall the thirteen original colonies, while the annulet around the eagle in profile suggests a wheel that invokes the vision of transportation and the delivery and distribution of Army materiel. The eagle, of course, is a reminder of our national spirit and our readiness to defend the freedoms granted by God and protected by the Constitution.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
