The 518th Infantry Regiment has been an Army Reserve unit since it was constituted in 1946 as the 518th Parachute Infantry in the Organized Reserves and activated on 6 August 1946 at Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1951 it was reorganized and redesignated as the 518th Airborne Infantry, a process repeated the next year when it became the 518th Infantry and was designated as an element of the 108th Infantry Division. It was designated a Regiment consisting of three Battalions (1st, 2nd, 3rd), all elements of the 108th Division (Training), on 30 April 1959. Today, the 1st and 3rd Battalions are subordinate units of the 2nd Brigade, 98th Training Division

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."The 518th Infantry Regiment’s Distinctive Unit Insignia reflects the unit’s geographical location near the border of North and South Carolina. Both the palmetto and pine tree are common in the region, while the hornet is a reference to the city of Charlotte, which General Cornwallis called a “hornet’s nest” during the Revolutionary War. “VIRTUS FIDES HONOR” inscribed on a scroll translates as “Courage, Faith, and Honor."
