U.S. ARMY 398TH FINANCE GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 398th Finance Group Distinctive Unit Insignia, also referred to as a “unit crest” or DUI, was approved on 21 May 1992. A silver-gray diamond with gold border incorporates the two branch colors of the Finance Corps, with gold additionally signifying excellence, black denoting strength and stability, and red for valor and bravery. The diamond is taken from the Finance Corps branch insignia, and the gold disc superimposed over it recalls gold’s history of coinage and thus the Group’s mission. “Funding The Victory” points to the overarching importance of the mission.

An upright sword is a symbol of military preparedness and strength, while the plumed hat placed over it is for Confederate Colonel John S. Mosby and his Rangers, an allusion to the unit’s peacetime headquarters in Northern Virginia and its history of providing support to its parent organization at the time of insignia approval, 310th Theater Army Area Command, whose members are informally referred to as “Mosby’s Rangers.”

Following a conversion and redesignation of the 398th Finance Group on 16 October 2007, this DUI is now worn by members of the 398th Financial Management Center. An Army Reserve unit, the Center is assigned to the 310th Sustainment Command, 377th Theater Sustainment Command and is stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia as of Autumn 2023.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
