U.S. ARMY 204TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 204th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, or unit crest, was approved for 23 March 1998 and reflects the Regiment’s mission of running the Idaho Army National Guard’s Regional Training Institute (RTI). In the center of the shield portion of the insignia is a wyvern, a two-legged dragon that in this instance is also a fire-breathing creature, wrapped around an upright sword. The combination of the sword and dragon is a symbol of military preparedness and is adapted from the Idaho Military Academy, the training institution from which the 204th Regiment was formed. “Intrepid Deeds” is the motto of the Regiment and the RTI.

All personnel assigned to an organization for which a Distinguished Unit Insignia has been authorized will wear the insignia, with the exception of General Officers (who wear Regimental Distinctive Insignias) and the Sergeant Major of the Army (which has a unique insignia). Enlisted personnel wear the insignia on the shoulder loops of the blue Army Service Uniform coat, while Officers wear them on the right chest area above the breast pocket of the coat. Enlisted personnel may also wear the insignia on the organizational flash on the beret.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
