The 178th Engineer Battalion is a unit in the South Carolina Army National Guard that was originally organized on 7 February 1947 as the 2nd Battalion, 218th Infantry, an element of the 51st Infantry Division. Its Headquarters Company’s lineage, which goes through the 178th Field Artillery, includes participation in three World War I and two World War II campaigns; the red shield used for its Distinctive Unit Insignia acknowledges this descent and also uses the 178th’s coat of arms (the running fox), placed within a border, to represent the relationship. The Regiment used “fox” as self-reference in field communications, and it was included in the insignia to symbolize the pride in the organization’s ability to move long distances rapidly and on time. “Ready, Sir!” is the unit motto and epitomizes the organization’s commitment to service and focus on preparedness.
Originally approved for the 248th Field Artillery battalion on 2 June 1952 (both the 248th and 178th were elements of the 51st Infantry Division), the insignia—also called a unit crest or DUI—was rescinded in July 1960, but was reinstated and redesignated for the 178th Engineer Battalion in October 1993.Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

After its organization in 1947, the 2nd Battalion, 218th Infantry was converted and redesignated as the 2nd Reconnaissance Squadron, 263rd Armor, still an element of the 51st Infantry Division. It was expanded to become the 2nd Battalion, 263rd Armor in April 1963, at which time it was relieved from assignment to the 51st Infantry Division. From 1 January 1968 to 1 January 1974, the Battalion was assigned to the 30th Infantry Division.
It wasn’t until 1 October 1995 that the organization was finally designated as Engineer unit when it was converted and redesignated as the 178th Engineer Battalion. It would be reorganized and redesignated in September 2008 to consist of HQ and a Support Company, with it’s A, B, and C Companies simultaneously reorganized and redesignated to begin new lineages as the 174th Engineer Company, 12222nd Engineer Company, and the 172nd Engineer Platoon, respectively.
As of Summer 2023, the 178th Engineer Battalion’s campaign participation in the War on Terrorism is yet to be determined. It was ordered into active Federal service until 7 July 2012 when it deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Just a little over a year after it was released from Federal service (10 August 2013), it was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation on 22 August 2014 for its exceptional service between 5 September 2012 and 8 May 2013.
The 178th Engineer Battalion is headquartered at Rock Hill, South Carolina.
