U.S. ARMY 1034TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Worn by personnel in the 1034th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, the 1034th Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved for wear on 10 October 2006. The jarlike shape of the insignia, which is also referred to as a DUI or unit crest, suggests an olla, a Mexican water jar featured on the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia worn by the Iowa Army National Guard.

The insignia’s homage to its home state continues with the hawk’s head, recalling the nickname “Hawkeye State” for Iowa as well signifying the unit’s vigilance in delivering support. In the lower center of the insignia, a saber is crossed with a key and placed over a ship’s wheel; the saber denotes combat readiness; combined with the key and wheel, it symbolizes the unit’s support for warrior through the Quartermaster Corps and Transportation Corps. The red, white, and blue flag is adapted from the Iowa State flag. “Support The Warrior” is the Battalion motto.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
