WISCONSIN ARMY NATIONAL GUARD ELEMENT, JOINT FORCE HQ UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the Wisconsin Army National Guard Element (ARNG), Joint Force Headquarters (HQ) was originally approved for State Staff Corps and Departments, non-color and non-standard bearing units of the Wisconsin National Guard on 13 August 1929. It was redesignated for HQ and HQ Detachment and non-color bearing units of the Wisconsin Army National Guard on 31 December 1970, and was subsequently redesignated for HQ, State Area Command, Wisconsin Army National Guard with an effective date of 1 October 1982. Its last redesignation, which was concurrent with an updated description and new symbolism, had an effective date of 1 October 2003.

With imagery taken directly from the Great Seal of the State of Wisconsin, this unit crest celebrates the heritage and history of Wisconsin. A hexagon divided vertically into halves features a sailor on the viewer’s left and a yeoman farmer on the right, representing labor on the water (Lakes Michigan and Superior) and land. Beneath a scroll inscribed with the state motto “Forward” is a shield divided into quarters, with each section displaying an image representing a vital aspect of the state’s economy: pick and shovel (mining), plow (agriculture), arm and hammer (industrial manufacturing), and anchor (water transport).

Above the quartered shield is a badger, the state animal, while below it are a cornucopia (horn of plenty) symbolizing abundance and prosperity and a pyramid of 13 lead ingots for rich mineral deposits. In the shield’s center is the Coat of Arms of the United States, denoting Wisconsin’s loyalty to the Union during the War Between the States.

Joint Forces Headquarters, Wisconsin National Guard is based in Madison, Wisconsin.
