Staff Noncommissioned Officers (E-6 to E-9), or SNCOs, are the only Enlisted personnel authorized to wear an Evening Dress Uniform featuring high-waisted, or “high-rise,” Evening Dress Trousers. Manufactured in the same sky-blue shade as the Blue Dress Trousers and sporting the same scarlet stripe, the Evening Dress Trousers are worn with a scarlet cummerbund and a dark-blue Evening Jacket upon which 1890’s-style gold-on-scarlet chevrons have been sewn.
Worn in both Summer and Winter, the SNCO Evening Dress Uniform is worn at social functions at which civilians would wear black- or white-tire attire. It is technically considered an optional uniform; in reality, ownership of the SNCO Evening Dress Uniform should be considered de rigeur by any Enlisted Marine in the SNCO grades who takes his career and profession seriously.
