On the shoulder boards worn by Lieutenant Generals in the Air Force, a star is placed in the center of the board and the two remaining stars are centered between the bottom of the board’s snap-on button and the outside edge of the board. The star are arranged in a point-to-center array with a single point toward the neck.
Shoulder boards are mandated for wear with both the Men’s and Women’s variations of the Formal Dress and Mess Dress uniforms, with different board sizes for the Men’s and Women’s uniforms. They’re attached to the uniform coats by sliding the board’s hinged bottom through a pair of loops on each shoulder, then buttoning the board shut again when the board is securely in place.
The Air Force Mess Dress coat worn with both these uniforms has relatively austere ornamentation, with the only additions to the shoulder boards on Officers’ uniforms being
silver sleeve braid. Enlisted Mess Dress coats are even more modest, featuring
chevrons for rank insignia midway between the shoulder seam and elbow on each sleeve.
