A silver bar on a blue background is the used on the cap, collar, and coat rank insignia devices for Chief Warrant Officers 3 in the United States Navy and Coast Guard. Rules for placement on the Garrison Cap are the same in both services: worn on the wearer’s right, the device is oriented vertically with its center two inches from the cap’s front crease and one-and-a-half inches from the bottom. Additionally, both services mandate the wear of a CWO Cap device (the same device worn by Commissioned Officers) on the wearer’s left side of the cap following the same placement rules as the insignia of grade.

While reaching the grade of Chief Warrant Officer 3 (W-3) is an impressive achievement, both the Navy and Coast Guard expect these technical experts and leaders to continue to advance in both knowledge and responsibility. In fact, a CWO3 wo is passed over for promotion to W-4 two consecutive times is automatically retired or removed from active duty by U.S. Code.
