U.S. NAVY CWO DIVER SOFT EPAULETS

While the vast majority of the assignments given to Sailors in the Navy Diver (ND) rating are directly related to Naval or other military operations, their expertise is also called upon by civilian authorities in a variety of circumstances.

In 2015, for instance, Navy Divers and Explosive Ordnance Technicians (EOD) were dispatched to Savannah, Georgia to assist in the salvaging of the Confederate States Ship Georgia. Launched in 1863, the Georgia’s engines proved ineffectual for powering the ship in river currents, so it was anchored in the Savannah River to be employed as a floating artillery battery. The Georgia was scuttled when Union General William Sherman captured the city during his legendary “March to the Sea” in 1864.

The enigmatic vessel (no photos of the ship exist) might well have laid in its watery grave for many centuries if not for two factors: the decision to deepen the waterway access in the river to accommodate deep-sea ships, and the Navy Divers  and Explosive Ordnance Technicians that removed ordnance and casemates over a three-month period.

Navy Divers are also called upon as part of emergency-response operations. When the Interstate 35 bridge in Minnesota bridge collapsed in 2007, for example Navy Divers assisted the Army Corps of Engineers in carrying out disaster relief and recovery efforts. And following the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010, Navy Divers were deployed to Port-Au-Prince to assist in the reconstruction of the pier that was so badly needed to transport food and supplies arriving from around the world.
