U.S. NAVY CWO DATA PROCESSING TECHNICIAN SOFT EPAULETS

Before the CWO Data Processing Technician position was eliminated, the career path for Sailors who had advanced to this point was fairly well established.

For Data Processing Technicians who had been promoted to the 742x designator of CWO Data Processing Technician, sea tours as a CWO2 were spent aboard Landing Helicopter Docks (LHDs) and Landing Helicopter Assaults, where they were responsible for maintaining Automated Data Processing (ADP) systems. The first shore billet as a CWO2 was working in Personnel Support Activities as an ADP Officer.

There were no sea billets for CWO3 and CWO4 Data Processing Technicians in the mid-1990s. Shore billets included handling security for the ADP systems at the National Security Administration, serving as an ADP Operations Officer at a TYCOM (Type Commands performed a variety of functions related to a specific type of Naval category such as submarine, surface, aviation, etc.), or managing Information Systems related to Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity; these were found at the Navy’s two Naval Amphibious Bases, one in Coronado, California (near San Diego) and the other in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The final stop for CWO Data Processing Technicians was at the Naval Regional Data Automation Center as computer system analyst. Typically, this milestone was reached about eight years after being commissioned.
