U.S. NAVY CWO AVIATION OPERATIONS TECHNICIAN SOFT EPAULETS

An Airborne Electronic Intelligence Specialist (AEIS) is a Naval Aircrewman (AW) in the Avionics service rating (AWV) who is a member of a tactical crew that serves on board a fixed-wing maritime patrol aircraft. Maritime patrols typically perform three functions: reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare measures, and anti-surface warfare.

In the past, the primary fixed-wing platform for the AEIS was the P-3 Orion. Introduced over 50 years ago, the Orion is equipped with 10 hardpoints on its wings to carry a combination of air-to-surface missiles, bombs, depth charges, and torpedoes. For submarine detection, the P-3 features a magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) place in an extended tail section called a “stinger.” The Orion also employs a Maritime Surveillance Radar System and deploys and tracks sonobuoys.

Using these tools, the AEIS is tasked with the detection, classification, and analysis of all contacts—surface, subsurface, or airborne. Because of the types of vessels that an AWV team might detect and track, Sailors wishing to pursuing a job as an AEIS must be eligible for Top Secret Security, and they also must be SCI (Sensitive Compartmented Information) eligible.

Over the past few years, the P-3 Orion has been phased out and replaced with the P-8 Poseidon, which flew its first mission in 2012. While AWVs will be familiar with many of the weapons and systems deployed on the P-8, they will have to get used to a new, silent partner in their maritime patrols: The Poseidon was designed to work hand-in-hand with the unmanned aerial vehicle MQ-4C Triton.
