U.S. NAVY CWO AVIATION ELECTRONICS TECHNICIAN SOFT EPAULETS

Aviation Electronics Technicians (AT) who have been selected to work on carrier-based E-2 Hawkeyes will certainly not be lacking work: every carrier in a carrier air wing has at least four Hawkeyes, ensuring that the ship has at least one of them in the air at all times while others undergo maintenance in the hangar deck.

As the “eyes in the sky” for the U.S. Navy, the Hawkeye and its radar systems have been used by the U.S. Navy for over fifty years, with its debut deployment taking place in 1965 aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. During Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, all of the Navy’s Hawkeye squadrons flew sorties over land, performing functions ranging from the coordination close-air support strikes and airspace management to combat search-and-rescue missions.

Originally deployed in 2003, the E-2C Hawkeye 2000 variant showed that the time-tested aircraft could be upfitted to meet the most rigorous demands of the modern battlespace, with the ability to simultaneously track more than 2,000 targets (out of 20,000 being simultaneously detetected) at a range of more than 400 miles. As a command-and-control platform, the Hawkeye 2000 also can simultaneously guide between 40 to 100 air-to-air engagements or air-to-surface strikes.

Organizational Level ATs are responsible for troubleshooting and maintaining the radar systems on the E-2; Intermediate Level Aviation Electronics Technicians are tasked with the repair of those units.
