Senior Chief Petty Officers (E-8) are authorized to wear this specially designed interlocking belt buckle with the
black leather belt used when wearing the CPO cutlass. The Navy introduced the CPO cutlass in 2011 so that both Chiefs and Officers would have swords when serving as members of official parties in which Officers are required to wear swords. To maintain a consistent appearance at these formal events, the regulations call for a “all or none” standard for the CPO cutlasses: they may be worn only if all CPOs in the party wear them.
NAVADMIN 070/11 also details the other items required when wearing the CPO Cutlass, which is the only authorized cutlass that can be worn by Chief Petty Officers in Full Dress Uniform. These include the
leather belt, a matching black leather scabbard featuring a brass top mount and toe plate, a black leather shoulder harness, and a
black leather frog.
