U.S. NAVY ILLUSTRATOR DRAFTSMAN (DM) RATING BADGE

The Illustrator Draftsman (DM) rating was originally established as simply Draftsman in 1948. At that time, the ratings of Carpenter’s Mate Draftsman, Electrician’s Mate Draftsman, Shipfitter Mechanical Draftsman, and four Specialist ratings—Engineering Draftsman, Topographic Draftsman, Cartographer, and Photogrammetrist—were merged to create the new rating. In 1959, the Draftsman rating was changed to Illustrator Draftsman. The badge featured a compass and a rectangle, timeless tools used in making maps, blueprints, and other technical drawings.

As part of the Navy’s “total force” strategy, it was announced in 2006 that four existing ratings—Illustrator Draftsman (DM), Journalist (JO), Lithographer (LI), and Photographer’s Mate (PH)—would be merged under the new Mass Communication Specialist (MC) rating. The MC badge was designed to convey the mission and methods envisioned for the new rating. A globe being orbited by a satellite represents the ability of MCs to accomplish a mission anywhere on the planet; the addition of the satellite represents the ability of MCs to employ cutting-edge technology to transmit information and media directly to where their impact is most critical. Four lightning bolts, representing the traditional “four corners” of the globe, symbolize the power to almost instantaneously transmit, publish, and disseminate information and data in the four most dominant formats: audio, graphics, text, and video.
