Adapted in the mid-1800s by British military officers stationed in India who observed their wear by natives and embraced it as an alternative to stuffy waistcoats, cummerbunds transitioned into an integral component of the white- and black-tie dress standards being formed later in the 19th and at the start of the 20th century.

Because uniform regulations can vary between the companies that own the vessels in the Merchant Marine, we offer cummerbunds not only in large (male) and small (female) sizes, but also in either gold and silver. Our cummerbunds fasten in the rear and are adjustable to provide for a comfortable fit.

Unless there are some type of instructions to the contrary, cummerbunds are worn pleats up and should be worn at the natural waist so they cover roughly equal amounts of shirt and trousers/skirt. (Note: the U.S. Army is alone in the military services in mandating that cummerbunds are worn pleats down.)
